Toys, Bling and Everything (in between)

Numerous commercials flood our screens advertising home and auto insurance. And thank goodness for those companies and their constant reminders to bundle and save 😊.  However, your home and automobiles aren’t the only items that need to be insured. Our society is coming off three important holidays within the last few months: Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s day. These epic gatherings and celebrations produce an environment for gifts ranging from jewelry to mint collectables. On the coattails of this exciting season is the anticipation of Spring, bringing warmer weather and opportunities for outside activities. While I certainly don’t want you waking up and thinking about insurance, I do think it’s crucial to verify you have the coverage you need now so you can enjoy, without worry, new seasons and the new gifts they bring.

Here’s just a brief review that is in no way all inclusive. Your homeowners and auto policies do NOT automatically include the full value of jewelry, furs, coins, collectables, boats, RVs, travels trailers, ATVs or motorcycles. In order to have the best possible coverage, it’s imperative to schedule these items on an existing policy or let these item(s) have their own policy. Take a quick peek at the examples below:

  1. Jewelry/furs/collectables/guns: available to schedule on your existing homeowners policy. It is best to be as detailed as possible with description and amounts of insurance desired. In some cases, an appraisal may be required for items that exceed a threshold of $2,500
  2. Boats/Jet skis: they should have their own policy that includes liability. Sometimes putting it on the home is available, but in the event of a loss, there’s better coverages when a boat has it’s own policy.
  3. ATVs/Motorcycles: they should have their own policy that includes liability. You will be able to list the amount of insurance desired for the value of the item depending on the year of the item. Photos may be required. (Similar to an auto policy) There may be discounts available for motorcycle safety courses.
  4. Travel Trailers/RV’s: they should have their own policy that includes liability. You will need to list the amount of insurance desired for the value of the item and you can choose deductibles for physical damage to the item (similar to an auto policy)
